Fight the Bite: How to Keep Your Community Safe from Mosquitoes and the Diseases They Spread

Through didactic presentations, interactive games and role playing, workshop attendees will learn about the role that promotores can play to prevent vector-borne diseases. In addition attendees will learn important and practical information related to disease prevention, including: a) how diseases are transmitted from vector (mosquito) to humans and animals; b) how to identify mosquito breeding sources and prevent them; c) the mosquito life cycle; d) signs there are local invasive Aedes mosquitoes present; e) who to contact to get rid of them, f) how to protect yourself from getting bitten; g) how to recognize the signs and symptoms of Zika and other viruses; and h) Understand the risks associated with contracting such viruses, and if there are any existing vaccines or treatment.

Objectives:

  1. Promotores will be able to identify at least three steps that community members can take to prevent mosquito breeding sites on or around their homes and in the community.
  2. Promotores will be able to identify at least three personal protective measures individuals can take to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
  3. Promotores will be able to identify at least three different vector borne viruses, including Zika.
