Hurray for Promotores Who Speak Out About Cancer Prevention! How a Conversation About the Human Papilloma Virus Can Save Lives
During this workshop community health workers will be provided with the information, tools and resources to be able to educate their communities about how vaccination against certain human papilloma virus infections (HPV) is cancer prevention. Statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that HPV can cause up to 90% of cervical and anal cancers, and close to 70% of vaginal and vulval cancer cases each year. The American Cancer Society (ACS) has reported that Latinos often face smaller survival rates from HPV-related cancers than other ethnic groups. Now we can prevent these statistics with a simple vaccine.
OBJECTIVES:
- Learn how HPV vaccination is cancer prevention using at least two tools which will include: motivational interviewing and ACS approved tools and resources.
- Learn about the age criteria for HPV vaccination that they can share with community members and how to direct them to the appropriate facilities and resources for vaccination.
- Use key statistics and facts to debunk myths and misconceptions around HPV vaccination.
