Promotoras Leading the Way Toward a Fair and Complete Census

Why start preparing for the 2030 Census now? The foundation for an accurate count is built years before Census Day. Decisions about address lists, questionnaire content and outreach determine if all populations are represented. Drawing from community-engaged immigrant research and the 2020 San Joaquin Valley Census Campaign, this interactive workshop highlights how promotoras serve as trusted messengers, community experts and advocates. Participants will identify strategies and advocacy opportunities to support an inclusive count in their communities.

  • Explain at least three reasons why it is important to start engaging on and preparing for the Census now.
  • Identify local factors that may contribute to an undercount, including unconventional housing arrangements, community fear, and hidden populations.
  • Develop at least two community-based outreach or advocacy strategies that can support an accurate and inclusive 2030 Census count locally.
