How to Cultivate Resilience in Our Clients Using Motivational Interviewing
ENGLISH INTERPRETATION IS AVAILABLE
Motivational interviewing (MI) is about recognizing people’s own accomplishments, efforts, experiences, and calling those forward. MI is based on a strength-based approach that teaches us how to practice reflective listening to listen for those “golden nuggets” or language that favors change and present it in a way that helps the person acknowledge their resilient traits. This is not always easy, considering providers/promotores often operate with the mindset of wanting to help others and often fall into the expert trap where the provider often comes from a deficit perspective looking for what’s missing rather than drawing out the person’s own strengths and values.
- Identify one of the key elements of the spirit of MI that will help them strengthen the link with their clients.
- Identify how affirmations can work with Latino clients and how they can be used to recognize and respond to the resiliency characteristics of the client.
- Practice affirmations through group activities and in pairs to help them learn how to use them with Latino clients and strengthen conversations about change.
