Cavities Get Around: What Every Parent and Caregiver Should Know About Children’s Oral Health

This workshop will introduce participants to the steps everyone can take to protect children from developing cavities, to understand the burden of untreated tooth decay, and about how the disease disproportionally affects Latino children. Participants will come away with simple, low cost activities and educational tools that they will be able to use when they return to their own communities and will be given the opportunity to create a plan to make positive change in his or her household. Participants will learn about the importance of taking care of baby teeth, how cavities form, and how to prevent tooth decay.

Objectives:

  1. Promotores will gain an understanding of children’s oral health as an important component of overall health and how it disproportionately effects the Latino community.
  2. Promotores will be able to explain three key messages for children’s oral health: a) Babyteeth matter; b) Limit juice to meal-times; c) Offer children water between means and before bed.
  3. Promotores will lean how to read nutrition labels and to convert grams of sugar to teaspoons.
